Animals are a vital part of the interpretation at Colonial Williamsburg. This painting captures a carriage horse grazing in the pasture on its day off at Colonial Williamsburg and appears much as it would in the 18th Century. This particular pasture is located on the corner of Francis and Nassau Street across from the public hospital.

Tuckahoe was the family plantation of William Randolph, and also the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson. At the end of a row of out buildings flanking the mansion sat this attractive horse head hitching post.

Julie Scott ~ Artist

With at least four generations of artists and avid horsemen in Julie Scott's family, one could say she inherited her career. Julie started drawing at the age of four, and began teaching herself how to paint with oils when she was ten years old. As a child, Julie Scott used only the primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and white. She says, "It began merely as an exercise inspired by my Mom to learn the color wheel, but has become the basis for how I mix my colors today."

In high school, Julie Scott was able to take several formal art classes, and went on to major in art at college. Frustrated by the pressure from the academic world to produce modern art, she transferred after two years.

While developing her talents as an artist, Julie Scott also spent a great deal of time cultivating her skills as an equestrian. With the decision to put art on the back burner, her time was now devoted to her other life-long passion. Julie ultimately graduated with a B.A. in Equine Studies.

Since graduation, Julie Scott has once again picked up her paint brushes and is now a successful artist with her faithful assistant always nearby.
