Spotty was a registered Appaloosa gelding, a 16.0 hand Leopard Appaloosa with spots everywhere. He was many things in his life: a western barrel racer, a hunter-jumper, a dressage competitor, a pleasure mount, and a therapeutic riding horse. He was known for his gentleness with children, his saucy personality, his willingness to try just about anything, and his loyalty to those who loved him. He was my companion for the last seven years of his life. He taught me what it means to bond with and trust a horse and to have a true partner in riding. He beyond a doubt exemplified the Appaloosa Spirit.

Karat is a golden Appendix Quarter Horse. He stands 16.1 hands. He was a hunter-jumper when young but for the last several years has been a lesson horse. He is a spirited mount whom I have so enjoyed riding. Once Karat got to know me if he was lying in his stall when I arrived, he would look up as I entered and then expect a horse treat, still lying down. He also could be a mischief-maker, as you can see from his painting.

Desche is a 24-year old Lipizzan stallion, who lives at a friend’s farm near Lynchburg. He is a grand-prix level dressage competitor and haute-ecole dressage exhibition mount. His high-school specialty is the “courbette”, an almost vertical leap into the air. He performs this incredible feat, on command from his rider. Desche has often been photographed. He has even been a “center-fold” in Horse Illustrated magazine. He may be retired from showing in a year or two but will still be giving lessons so that up-and-coming riders can feel what it is like to ride a dressage master.

Patricia Bevan ~ Artist

Patricia Bevan of Blacksburg, Virginia fell in love with horses when a little girl. Now she rides as well as paints these splendid beings. She is awed by the beauty, grace, gentleness, and power of every horse she encounters. Painting challenges her to capture each one's unique personality.

In addition to painting equines of all types, Patricia enjoys painting landscapes, which are a reflection of her feelings about the beauty of the natural world. She especially is drawn to the character of the landscapes of Southwestern Virginia, from which she continually gains inspiration.

Patricia paints primarily with pastels because of the qualities of the medium. Dry pastels are sticks of pure pigment, containing only the smallest amount of binder to hold the pigment particles together. Some brands of pastel have the feel of pencils, whereas others have a buttery texture and glide across paper almost like paint. Pastels can be used "alla prima", which is essentially one layer of pastel in a painting, or they can be built up with many layers that produce a painting with subtle yet complex hues and values that seem to vibrate with energy.

Patricia received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from Virginia Tech. In addition, she has studied with a variety of artists, including Vera Dickerson and Mary Jane Birch of the Studio School in Roanoke, Virginia and nationally known artists Daniel Greene and Louis Cadillac. Currently, using Internet technology, she is studying with Dawn Emerson, a renowned pastel painter from the state of Oregon.

Patricia’s artwork has been exhibited and has received awards in regional and national exhibitions. Her paintings are in both private and corporate collections.

You can view images of more of her artwork by visiting her website. Her landscape work also is represented by the George Billis Gallery in New York City (www.georgebillis.com).
